The Basque Country, or the Republic of the Basque Country, is a republic localized in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The Basque Country borders the Atlantic Ocean to the northwest, France to the northeast, Aragon to the southeast, and Castile to the southwest.

The nation is a post-Spanish state, created after the Second World War. The current territory was occupied by France along with Aragon. The Basque Country achieved independence, in 1953, after Aragon and Castile reached in 1949, Melilla and the Canary Islands in 1951, and Galicia in 1952. Holding a referendum to a monarchy, the Basque Country was the nation that most rejected the return of the crown, with almost 87% of the population rejecting it.

Currently, the Basque Country is considered a very controversial country regarding its ideologies. Some nations (such as Castile and France) consider the country an ethnostate, due to the high influence of Basque nationalism and the shaky relations with its neighbors, such as Castile, and France, due to Iparralde. The political system of the country has been dominated by the two major parties: the populist Basque Nationalist Party, and the left-wing Gather.

Despite the controversies, the Basque Country is considered a major developed country, enjoying a very high Human Development Index and a low Gini index. It is a member of the Society of Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Iberian Federation, and an observer state of the Shanghai Pact.
