The Basque Republic (Basque: Euskal Errepublika; Euskadi) is a sovereign state located in the Iberian Peninsula of Southern Europe. The nation is bordered by France in the north and Spain in the south.
Originally an autonomous republic of the Spanish Socialist Republic, the Basque Republic (along with Catalonia and Galicia) broke away from Madrid in 1993 during the transition away from communism.
