At the end of the Second World War, the southern half of Germany as well as Austria were occupied primarily by Polish and French troops. When it was decided by the allies to reconstitute the German nation, the type of new nation was disputed between the north and the south. Ultimately, the decision was made to unite the southern portions of Germany with Austria to create the new nation of Bavaria. Given the historic links between Bavaria, Baden, and Austria that stretch back to the middle ages, as well as similar religious histories, this sat well with the residents of those nations. Today, Bavaria is a member of the non-aligned movement, and retains strong ties of friendship with both France and Poland.
