Joseph Robinette Biden III (born February 3, 1969) is an American politician, lawyer, and former army veteran who has been serving as the junior US Senator from Delaware since 2021. Prior to his election as Senator, Biden had served as Attorney General of Delaware and Governor of Delaware. Like his father, he belongs to the Progressive party. Known for his reasoning and high appeal, Biden is considered by many progressives as a possible future presidential candidate.
Early life and family[]
Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 3, 1969. He is the eldest child of Joe Biden, a former US Senator and his wife Neilia Hunter Biden. Beau has two younger siblings, a brother Robert "Hunter" Biden (b. 1970) and a sister, Naomi Christina "Amy" Biden (b. 1971).
Beau Biden married Hallie Olivere in 2002. They had two children: daughter Natalie Naomi (b. 2004), and son Joseph Robinette "Roe" IV (b. 2006).
Political Career[]
Beau Biden was long groomed as a potential political heir to Joe Biden. In 2006, Beau Biden announced his intention to seek the progressive nomination for Attorney General of Delaware, even though he had not been a practising attorney since 1999. In the primary, he faced off against Attorney Tim Mackie, winning 84.1% to Mackie's 15.9%. In the general election, he unseated incumbent Unionist Carl Danberg who was seeking a second term. Biden won 57.4% to Danberg's 42.6%. He was re-elected Attorney General in 2010, facing Danberg in a rematch, winning 56.5% to Danberg's 43.5%. He did not seek re-election in 2014, announcing a campaign for Governor.
In January 2015, Biden launched a campaign for Governor of Delaware. It had been expected that Joe Biden would retire in 2014 and allow for Beau to contest the Senate election but since Joe announced his re-election plans, Beau became a leading candidate for Governor. Although initially challenged by Lieutenant Governor John Carney in the primary, Beau won the primary unopposed after Carney withdrew and sought a third term as Lieutenant Governor. He won the general election against State Senator Colin Bonini, securing 60.4% to Bonini's 38.9%.
On December 7, 2018, Senator Joe Biden announced his decision to not seek a historic ninth term in the Senate. Many analysts were confused to see if the popular Beau Biden would run for Senate or seek re-election as Governor. Lisa Blunt Rochester, US Representative from Delaware's at-large district announced her candidacy for Senate on December 12, 2018. After much speculation, Gov. Beau Biden announced on January 3, 2019, that he would not seek re-election as Governor and would instead run for Senate. However, he also said that he would not be filing as a candidate until the end of summer to focus on his current job as Governor. His campaign team worked on fundraising, and he racked up a lot of endorsements. His father refused to endorse in the primary, saying "it is clear who I support, but an endorsement in a primary to succeed me goes against my working ethics."
On 25 September 2019, Beau Biden officially entered the race for Senate and was leading the polls. Lieutenant Governor John Carney sought the governorship. Biden and Blunt Rochester faced each other in a debate in February 2020. After briefly gaining traction, Blunt Rochester was polling at 20% compared to Biden who was at 70%. Blunt Rochester ultimately withdrew and filed for re-election as US Representative. This prompted Beau Biden to win the Senate primary unopposed. He defeated conspiracy theorist Lauren Witzke, winning 72.3% to her 27.8%
