Alternative History

Beijing (or Peking in Wade-Giles, meaning "northern capital") is the capital of China. It had many names throughout its history: Ji/Chi, Yan/Yen, Guangyang/Kuang-yang, Youzhou/Yu-chou, Fanyang/Fan-yang, Zhongdu, Khanbaliq/Dadu, Beiping/Pei-p'ing, Shuntian/Shün-t'ien, Jingshi/Ching-shih, and Jingdu/Ching-tu. During the Chinese republic, it was renamed again to Beiping/Pei-p'ing (northern peace) to emphasize that it wasn't the capital anymore. The occupying Japanese imposed the name Peking/Beijing in 1937.
