Annexation of lands to the east[]

As Russia collapsed, Belarus annexed the western part of Smolensk Oblast and a few smaller regions (several villages, fields, and forests) in the Pskov Oblast and Bryansk Oblast.

After the revolution[]

A few months after the formation of new government, Belarus was still unstable due to the radiation and results of the protests. In 1998, Belarus, together with Poland, Ukraine, and Slovakia, formed the Intermarium. The formation helped Belarus to stabilize and to form good trading relations.

De-Russification laws[]

After new Belarusian government was fully established, the country became stable, and economic ties were made, Belarus started implementing new laws. Most of the laws aimed at preventing an authoritarian regime from ever forming again, but there were also some other laws. Among them were the de-Russification laws. These controversial laws degraded the status of Russian language from co-official to recognized minority, and increased the use of Belarusian language through quotas in the media. As Belarus mostly spoke Russian, many people were against the laws, so most of them were eventually cancelled. But, Russian did not restore its co-official status, and there are still debates on whether it should be restored.
