After a disputed election in 2020, a coup was held to defeat President Lukashenko who by this point had made an enemy even of Russia.
In 2020 Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was inaugurated as acting President, declaring elections to be held in 2024 at the latest. The Belarusian legislature was vacated as emergency powers were granted to Tsikhanouskaya to continue to reform government affairs. Tsikhanouskaya's government was recognized by most of the west as Lukashenko was forced to flee to China. Tsikhanouskaya met with US President Mitt Romney as well as representatives from The EU, and Canada to discuss protection against the possibility of a Russian invasion. Belarus was granted special NATO Membership to account for this issue.
Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea all dispute the coup and consider the previous government to be the only official one.
On October 1st, Tsikhanouskaya changed the flag of Belarus to the one used most commonly by protestors. The old flags were taken down and burned in celebrations. At the same time Tsikhanouskaya also declared that Russian was no longer an official language to try and reclaim their status as an independent nation and combat Russian influence.
By November, American Military bases were set up in Belarus and the process to elect a legislature had begun, with Tsikhanouskaya saying that she'd consider the possibility of exploring EU membership.
