The Kingdom of Belgium (Frankish: Koninkrijk België, Lyonnaise: Royaume de Belgique) is a sovereign state in western Europe, adjoining Holland, Saxony, Lyonesse, the Gallic Channel and the North Sea. It takes its name from the ancient Roman province of Belgica, whose territory it covers roughly the northernmost half of.

The region was overrun by Frankish tribes in the early 5th century, and Belgium thereafter formed part of the Duchy of France for over a thousand years. The duchy was dismembered by Aquitaine whilst occupied during the First World War, and Belgium was created as a rump successor state after much of the south and east had been annexed by Lyonesse and Saxony respectively. The new country survived the end of the war as neither of its neighbours were willing to surrender the annexed territory, and retains its independence to this day.
