The Kingdom of Belgium is a medium power in western Europe and acts as a buffer state between France, Hanover, Denmark and the HRE. Established in 1903, following the end of the Great War (World War Three) Belgium has struggled not to be bullied around by its larger and more threatening neighbors, as well as establish its own national identity. Before becoming independent, Belgium had been under the rule of the First French Empire from 1796-1902 before it was captured by invading German forces. Belgium was given administration of Holland after the war and was also ceded the Congo by America. The Belgian rule in both regions was brutal and repressive and the Congolese fought a brutal guerrilla war for independence between 1943 and 1977, or 34 years. The Belgians were forced to pull out eventually after losing over 2.3 million men and countless planes and tanks. They have kept a strict control over Holland, and in 1982, joined America, France and Denmark in invading Britain to assist Ireland in achieving its independence. The nation has good relations with America as the American emperor from 1979 to 2017, Matteo is from Liege.
