Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. Its 7,000,000 (2018) inhabitants make it the most populous city proper of the European Community, and the third largest in Europe after London and Moscow.
Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. The metropolis is a popular tourist destination. Significant industries also include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction and electronics.
Berlin is renowned for its stunning architecture, which is a combination of various 19th-century roads and palaces, the large 20th-Century projects such as the New Reichstag and the reconstructed Siegesstraßel, and early modernist high-rises.
Berlin is often seen as the centre of the European Community, and the former centre of the former German Bloc (1920-1995).
Differences from OTL Berlin[]
- Berlin’s population rapidly declined after World War II as a result of the partition (among other things). As the partition of Berlin never happens, Berlin’s population stays stable and rising throughout the 20th Century.
- As East Berlin isn’t controlled by the Soviets, Berlin’s industry develops at a more even rate, which leads to there not being a significant difference between East and West.
