Bhutan, officially the Empire of Bhutan (Dzongkha:འབྲུག་རྒྱལ་ཁབ) is a country situated in the Himalayas.
History[]
Formation[]
Ngawang Namgyal,a Tibetan Buddhist Lama of the Drukpa school (rival to the Tibetan Gelugpa school),was the founder of the nation. He unified the nation as a theocracy, led by a Druk Desi, and a breakaway state of the Tibetan Empire. His successors would create a unique Bhutanese identity separate from the Tibetan culture it was derived from.
Conflicts and the collapse of the Druk Desi system[]
Conflicts with Tibet,Civil conflict, and British incursion made it hard for the State to survive. In 1907,the Wangchuck Dynasty was founded. It took over Yunnan and Nepal from the weakened Chinese and Hindustani Empires.
