Point of Divergence

After the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan refuses to surrender and launches an offensive into Okinawa as a final attempt to regain the strategic Ryukyu. This, however, sends an deadly message for the Allies. The final phase of the bombings was set and the third atomic bomb was dropped on Tokyo, killing the most leaders of the Japanese military and the royal seat in an instant.

Operation Downfall goes through and Japan, now a chaotic mix of warlords that were once regional military leaders, began to fall to the Allies. The entire Japanese mainland is captured by the allies by mid-1946. Meanwhile, in Manchukuo, the Chinese Communist Party is fighting for Mainland China in the Chinese Civil War. In 1947, the CCP deploys guerilla warfare to areas near Tibet, but ground forces unknowingly push into Tibet, causing the Battle of Lhasa. The Tibetan and National governments launch an offensive into Manchukuo, with the help of the United States with their forces stationed in Japan. By early 1948, the CCP signs an armistice to end the war. They would retain control of their controlled lands, which was Manchukuo, and that a buffer zone administered by the United Nations would be established between Nationalist China and Communist China, now naming themselves the People's Republic of Manchuria. The buffer zone was mainly clear of any population centers, but it divided Beijing from North to South, leading to the creation of East Beijing, controlled by Manchuria, and West Beijing, controlled by Nationalist China. A shorter Korean War breaks out right after, leading to the formation of the Federal Republic of Korea.

(PARAGRAPH WIP)

The Korean government stayed isolationist after the formation of the Second Republic. The international airports of the peninsula were converted into military airfields and ports fell into disrepair after the passage of the Commercial Maritime Operations Cessation Legislation. Only embassies would remain as foreign relations hubs. (WIP)
