Bornholm is an island and a region of Denmark, located in the southern Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark. Originally settled by the Danes, Bornholm was contested between Denmark and Sweden for numerous decades: in the end, it remained a part of Denmark, and was made into a region not long after the creation of Scandinavia.
The island is rocky and mountainous, and not densely populated: the major urban centres are all located on the coasts. Bornholm's economy is modest, and relies mainly on fishing and mining.
