The Boshin War was a large scale conflict in Japan between the pro-western Imperial forces and the anti-western Shogun forces. The war lasted from late 1847 to December 1868 with the arrest of the proclaimed Shogun Hosokawa. Among the rebels were a group of radical Shinto peasants led by infamous Hong Xihuan. The war lead to several centralization reforms, taking away power from the feudal lords, abolishing the Shogunate, and the centralization of Shinto into a syncretic Shinto-Catholic Religion headed by the Emperor.
