Founded as the Spanish Viceroyalty of Nueva España, Brasil was originally the largest nation on the continent. However, following a war with the Portuguese colony of Guiana, much northern territory was lost in the early 1800s. Then later, the southern territories broke away and became the nation of Uruguay. Today, Brasil is the poorest nation on the continent, although it is starting to make some forward strides.
