Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil), officially the United States of Brazil (Portuguese: Estados Unidos do Brasil) is the largest country in South America and Latin America. At 8.5 square kilometers and with over 217 million people, Brazil is the world's fifth-largest country by area and the seventh most populous. Its capital is Brasília, and its most populous city is Rio de Janeiro. It is the only country in the Americas to have Portuguese as an official language. It is one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from around the world, and the most populous Roman Catholic-majority country.
Brazil is one of the few Latin American only countries, along with Costa Rica, that did not pass through an authoritarian regime during the Cold War. Despite being one of the largest and most populous countries in Latin America, Brazil managed to maintain a democratic government throughout the Cold War era. This was no small feat, as many of Brazil's neighbors fell under military dictatorships during this time.
