Brazil, officially the Empire of Brazil, (Brazilian Portuguese: Império do Brasil, Spanish: Imperio de Brasil) is a sovereign state located in northern South America. It is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy that started under, and is currently under, the rule of Dom Pedro I and his family. The country is the largest country in South America and boasts a population of just under 220 million people. The country is highly regarded as a great power and also has one of the highest standards of living in the world. The country is bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the west, and the Republic of the Rio de la Plata to the south, as well as the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Brazil is one of the three surviving monarchies in Latin America, along with Mexico and Colombia. Brazil is considered a world power as well as the preeminent regional power in the South America, with Colombia and Argentina not far behind.
The country is also home to the largest ethnically Dutch population in South America, with 52% of the white Brazilian population having at least one Dutch ancestor. Dutch Brazilians are also the third largest population of ethnically Dutch people in the world outside the Netherlands, coming in after South Africa and the United States, but ahead of the Rio de la Plata.
