Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil), officially the Empire of Brazil (Portuguese: Império do Brasil), is the largest country in South America and in Latin America. Brazil is the world's third-largest country by area and the sixth most populous. Its capital is Vera Cruz, and its most populous city is São Paulo. The empire is composed of the union of the 21 provinces and the Federal District. It is the only country in the Americas to have Portuguese as an official language. It is one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from around the world, and the most populous Roman Catholic-majority country.

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, it borders all other countries and territories in South America except Ecuador and Chile and covers roughly half of the continent's land area. Its Amazon basin includes a vast tropical forest, home to diverse wildlife, a variety of ecological systems, and extensive natural resources spanning numerous protected habitats. This unique environmental heritage positions Brazil at number one of 17 megadiverse countries.

Brazil, a Portuguese colony, was inhabited by various tribal nations before Pedro Álvares Cabral claimed it in 1500. The Portuguese colony remained until 1808, when the capital of the empire was moved to Rio de Janeiro. In 1815, Brazil was elevated to a kingdom, and in 1822, independence was achieved with the creation of the Empire of Brazil. The first constitution was ratified in 1824, leading to the formation of the National Congress. Following the 1886 coup, slavery was abolished in 1887. In 1955, an authoritarian military dictatorship emerged, which ruled until 1975, following a 5 year civil war, after which civilian governance resumed. Brazil's current constitution, formulated in 1976, defines it as a parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy.

Brazil is a regional and middle power that is an emerging power and a major PATO ally of the United States. Categorised as a developing country with a high Human Development Index, Brazil is considered an advanced emerging economy, having the eleventh largest GDP in the world by nominal, PPP, and the second largest in Latin America. As an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank and a newly industrialized country, Brazil has the largest share of global wealth in South America and it is one of the world's major breadbaskets, being the largest producer of coffee for the last 150 years. However, the country retains noticeable corruption, crime and social inequality. Brazil is a founding member of the Assembly of Nations, the CA15, BAICSA, League of Four emperors, and the Portuguese Commonwealth.
