Brussels (Walloon: Brussele, French: Bruxelles) is the capital and largest city of Belgium. It is located in the northern part of the country, not far from the border with the Netherlands, in the state of Walloon Brabant: it is built in a plateau, and it is crossed by the small Senne river.
Brussels was founded in the early Middle Ages, and rapidly became an important commercial centre. With time, it became the capital of Belgium, and it still is today. The city was occupied by German troops during the Great War, but it has fully recovered from the destruction caused by the conflict. Its economy is based on financial and administrative services, but its suburbs are also heavily industrialized.
