Burgundy, officially the Kingdom of Burgundy is a country primarily located in Western Europe. The country is bordered by Germany to the east, Switzerland to the east, France to the south and west, and the North Sea to the north, sharing maritime borders with Great Britain through the English Channel. It covers an area of 111,242 kmĀ² (42,951 sq mi) and as a population of 41 million people. The national capital is Nancy and the largest city is Brussels.

Throughout the Middle Ages, there were several states named after Burgundy. The modern Burgundy was formed under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy from the French House of Valois and was composed of both French and Imperial fiefs. The kingdom was founded with the unification under Charles the Bold. Its privileged position, being a major centre of trade and commerce, as well as its colonial empire during the 17th century made Burgundy one of the most powerful states in Europe during that era. Often rivaling France, during the Frenchā€“Burgundian wars.

Burgundy is a sovereign state, a federation and a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. Its states are generally divided between grand duchies, duchies, principalities and provinces. There's no official language at a federal level, although either Dutch and French are the most spoken and often standardized. German also has a co-official status with the former two. The Burgundian complex system of governance is directly related to its linguistic diversity.

Burgundy is a federal monarchy, and its system is widely influenced by the federalism of the Holy Roman Empire. It comprises the Capital Region and nine states, four of which are hereditary monarchies (grand duchies, duchies and principalities), the Crowns, and the rest are republican governments, the Provinces. The Burgundian system is mostly criticized for being considered remnants of the Feudal era. Most of the provinces were previously owned by the House of Valois, but they became independent from the crown after the Imperial Reform of 1834. The only crown that remains within direct rule of the royal house is Upper Burgundy, ruled by the heir apparent.
