CHPX-DT, virtual channel 35 and (digital UHF channel 22) for

Calgary, is a system of Ion O&O’s owned by Corus. It serves Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana and the Northwest Territory.

History[]

The CHPX system got its start in Saskatoon in 1975, as CKOM-TV, an NBC affiliate. Around that year, the CBC launched a SRC rebroadcaster to Bonnyville via CBXFT Edmonton. CKRG channel 20 in Regina followed suit for Saskatoon in 1979, as Saskatchewan's first major UHF station and the nation's 3rd ever ABC affiliate (beaten by CHCH Hamilton, ON from 1967 to 1970, now a Fox O&O and CJOC/ CFAC-7 Lethbridge, AB from 1975 to 1980, now sister CISA, a Global O&O). Two stations also signed on their respective transmitters, CKOM-TV-1 Regina channel 74 and CKRG-TV-1 Saskatoon channel 63 in 1980.

Six years later in Alberta, Alberta Broadcasters got approval for new stations airing HSN in Calgary and Edmonton, on channels 35 and 49 respectively as the call letters were CHSN-TV originating in Calgary.

Transmitters[]

Below is a list of Ion Transmitters that rebroadcasts CHPX, Stations that are in bold and have YTV (replaced Qubo) and Global (replaced Ion Plus). All are digital transmitters.

CHPX flash cut its transmitters in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Yellowknife, Regina, Saskatoon, Lloydminster on August 31, 2011, the date for those markets to Convert to Digital. The rest of the transmitters followed suit the next week in September 7.

In 2012, due to budget cuts, the CBC considered closing all of their analog transmitters. However, the CRTC denied it and told them to sell it. Eventually, Ion won stations in both phases of auctions. The Phase A and B sale was finalized respectfully for $250,000 total on June 14th, 2015 and $850, 000 on September 14, 2018. The transmitter flash cut from CBC analog to Ion Digital on June 19, 2015 and September 23, 2018.

Following Corus' acquistion of ion.ca, Analog translators for CISA in Southern Alberta and CFRE in Fort Qu'Appelle, SK flashcut to Digital, starting to serve the Lethbridge and Saskatoon translators respectively.
