CITY-DT, virtual channel 57 (UHF digital channel 44), is the flagship station to Citytv. It is located in Toronto, Ontario, and serves part of the province over-the-air. It was originally an independent station, but it evolved into a network starting with CKVU, a former Global station taking affiliation with Citytv.
History[]
CITY-DT was launched in 1972 on channel 79. It was one of two Canadian TV stations whose channel number was over 69, the other was Radio-Canada rebroadcaster CBEFT (now TVA station CFWD-DT). In 1983, it changed to channel 57. As part of the 2001 Vancouver television realignment, CKVU dropped its Global affiliation. One year later, it became a Citytv station. In 2007, Rogers bought CHUM Limited, the station’s previous owner.
Transmitters[]
In July 2012, Rogers acquired CBLT-4 from the CBC, as well as their other three main stations in Northern Ontario. CITY-DT, CITY-2, and CITY-3 converted to digital in 2011. The other transmitters converted to digital when it was bought in 2012. Sarnia's and North Bay's reason for transition is to bring another option in television in the areas other than CIII-DT/Global. CITY-DT-4 Kitchner's transition was because it was one of the last analog stations in Kitchner to operate when it was CBLN-1. As Kitchner is a mandatory transition market. Citytv stations in Timmins, Sudbury, and Sault Ste. Marie are semi-satellites, but listed as a separate station from CITY-DT.
Since May 3rd, 2020 CITY-DT-5 carried a subchannel for CTV2 Windsor (CHWI-DT) when CKCO-DT (Kitchner) rebroadcaster for Sarnia closed down the previous day.
