In 1991 the Confederate Soviets of America seceded from the United States. While the south had traditionally been the most conservative part of the United States the desire to end racial tensions and create racial homelands helped further the communist movement in the south. Furthermore, the collapsing economic and political strength of the United States caused southern leaders to wish to realign with the more powerful Soviet Union. The failure of President Dukkakis to intervene rapidly led to the break up of the United States.
As of 2005 it remains a shaky Soviet ally and there are talks of the CSA joining the Warsaw pact. The CSA has had an unstable economy and is a major shipment point for mail-order American Brides. The CSA was one of the few countries to support the 2003 USSR invasion of Iran.
