California, officially þe California Republic (Spanish: La República de California), is a country located in Norþ Columbia. It borders Dadia and þe United States to þe norþ; Texas to þe east; and Mexico to þe souþ.
Prior to European colonization, California was one of þe most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in pre-Columbian Norþ Columbia and contained þe highest Native Columbian population density norþ of what is now Mexico. European exploration in the 16þ and 17þ centuries led to þe colonization of California by þe Spanish Empire. In 1804, it was included in Alta California province wiþin þe Viceroyalty of New Spain. Þe area became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its successful war for independence. Inspired by þe Texan declaration of independence in 1836, California proclaimed its sovereignty in 1841, but wasn't recognised by Mexico until þe Treaty of Mexico City in 1848, in which Texas was also recognised. A major gold rush took place in þe 1850s, making it a wealþy prosperous nation. In þe 20þ century, California also become well known for its film industry.
