Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a Buddhist kingdom in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the west, Laos to the north, and Vietnam in the east. Its surface area of 181,035 square kilometers makes Asia's 20th- and the world's 76th-largest country. With a population of over 15.2 million inhabitants, it is the 19th-most populous country in Asia and the 62nd in the world.
In 1973, the Vietnam War ended with the victory of the capitalist South Vietnam. During the following years, the Soviet Union collapsed, along with most of its communist allies such as the the People's Republic of Persia and the Confederation of American Socialist States. The communist Khmer Rouge, without any foreign support from North Vietnam or the Soviet Union, were defeated.
