Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a Buddhist kingdom in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the west, Laos to the north, and Vietnam in the east. Its surface area of 181,035 square kilometers makes Asia's 26th- and the world's 92nd-largest country. With a population of over 15.2 million inhabitants, it is the 32nd-most populous country in Asia and the 76th in the world.
In 1973, the Vietnam War ended with the victory of the capitalist South Vietnam. During the following years, the Soviet Union collapsed, along with most of its communist allies such as the the People's Republic of Persia and the Confederation of American Socialist States. The communist Khmer Rouge, without any foreign support from North Vietnam or the Soviet Union, were defeated.
In 2021, Duong Sam Ol staged a military coup against dictatorial Prime Minister Hun Sen. The coup was secretly backed by the Khmer monarchy, and had the support of many politicians, both left-wing and right-wing. Hun Sen was arrested and tried and was sentenced to life in prison. Following the coup, a big gap between neo-Socialist and Conservative politicians occured, with the position of the Monarchy being questioned as well. A series of short protests occurred, demanding the end of a pseudo-absolute monarchy and an implementation of a more democratic system in place. The protests ended in September 14th with Duong Sam Ol and King Norodom Sihamoni denouncing both sides and a new constitution being signed.
