The Canary Islands are US territories located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa, exactly 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Morocco. The main islands are (from largest to smallest) TenerifeFuerteventuraGran CanariaLanzaroteLa PalmaLa Gomera and El Hierro. The archipelago also includes a number of islands and islets: La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este. In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to by the Romans as "the Fortunate Isles".

They were sold by Spain to the United States in 1875, and their transformation into a US territory was the most peaceful of the many territories that the US occupied.

Their capital is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is the largest and most developed of the capital cities of the US territories.

Independence movement[]

There has been a growing separatist movement in the islands since 1964 with the formation of the Movimiento por la Autodeterminación e Independencia del Archipiélago Canario (MPAIAC), due to the fact that most people in these islands speak Spanish as a first language (and English as their second) and because of the vast cultural differences between the Canarian people and the US.
