After the fall of Charlemagne's empire, the Capetian line of kings eventually emerged to impose their law upon what came to be known as the Kingdom of France. The Kingdom, however, was a fragile construct between feuding local lords and hungry neighbours, France disintegrated slowly until it was nothing but a half-forgotten memory.
