The Republic of Catalonia, otherwise known simply as Catalonia, is a nation in southern Europe located within the northeastern extremity of the Iberian Peninsula. Its capital, and largest, city is Barcelona. Catalonia's only borders are with Spain to the west and France and Andorra to the north.
Catalonia gained independence from the Kingdom of Spain in 1975 after a series of revolts, led by Catalonian socialist and nationalist radicals, occurred. In 1982 it obtained the Balearic Islands after taking a lawsuit against Spain to the League of Nation's Justice Department.
