Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya), officially the Catalan Republic (Catalan: República Catalana), is a country located on the east of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe and also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, Spain to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. Covering an area of 103,089 km sq (39,803 sq mi), Catalonia's terrain ranges diversely from permanent glaciers to verdant valleys, rich pasture lands and orchards, through to the arid steppes of the central lowlands. The capital and largest city, Barcelona, is the fifth-most populous urban area in Europe.
Catalonia is a highly industrialized country with advanced capitalist economy integrated with the rest of members of the European Community. It has a high nominal per capita income globally and its advanced economy ranks among the largest in Europe. Tourism, service and industrial sectors are the backbone of the country's economy. A member of the United Nations, the European Community and the Council of Europe, Catalonia is also one of the founding members of NATO.
