The Republic of the Caucasus, commonly known as Armenia after the Armenians, its dominant and most numerous ethnic group, is a sovereign state located in the southern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. It is bordered by the Roman Empire and Iran to the south and Lithuania to the north, and has shorelines along both the Black and Caspian Seas.

A republic was established in the area more than a thousand years ago, when Armenia was a vassal of the Roman Empire. As Rome weakened over the centuries Armenia gradually gained independence and began the process of unifying the Caucasus. It reached its greatest extent in the 11th century when, following the downfall of the Sassanid dynasty, it was able to acquire much of Persia - but most of its eastern territories were lost from the 13th century to the Mongols and to native Persian dynasties.

Government

The joint heads of state and of government are the two hypatosneri, who are elected biannually for a single two-year term with no possibility of reelection. Each hypatos has almost absolute executive and military power, but also has the power of veto over his colleague, preventing any abuse of power. They are assisted by other magistrates, including the praitoneri and kosmitoneri, and advised by the Khorhurd, which can pass non-legally binding decrees that nevertheless have significant political force. The Khorhurd is typically made up the most prominent and distinguished citizens in the country, who are appointed by a Grak’nnich’ elected every ten years. All other citizens have the right to take part in the Orensdir Zhoghovy, which holds supreme legislative power.

In this way, the Republic resembles a blend of monarchy, oligarchy and direct democracy - as was the case in the Roman Republic that inspired it.
