Central America (Spanish: Centroamérica), officially the Federal Republic of Central America (Spanish: República Federal de Centroamérica), is a country located in the central region of the American continent. It borders Colombia to the south, Mexico to the north, Belize to the northeast and is bathed by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Caribbean Sea on the east.

The nation originally declared independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821 as the United Provinces of Central America. Some of its territory was annexed by the First Mexican Empire in 1822 and then Central America formed the Federal Republic in 1823. From 1838 to 1840, the federation descended into civil war, with conservatives fighting against liberals and separatists fighting to secede. These factions were eventually able to overcome their ideological differences and the federation continued with each area having a high degree of autonomy. In the mid 19th-century, it became a local power.

Following the Mexican Reform War and Confederate Civil War, Central America became a hub for refugees fleeing war and instability throughout the 20th century. The largest immigrant communities were Mexican and Confederate, however there was also significant immigration from Europe, Asia, and Australia as well. The largest immigrant communities are Little Richmond in Managua which consists of white confederates who fled communism, and San Pedro in San Juan which consists of mostly Mexican immigrants.

With a surface area of over 422 square kilometers, the federation is the eighth-largest country in North America and the 61st largest in the world. With 45 million inhabitants, it is also the fourth-most populous nation in North America and 43rd-most populous in the world.

Demographics[]

The population of Central America is young, with about 38.5% of the population being under 14 years old, another 58.2% is between 14 and 65 years old and 3.3% is over 65 years old (according to the 2022 estimate). In 2023 fertility rate stood at 2.95.

For most of it's history CA had a majority Catholic population with a significant Orthodox minority which came from the Greek settlers from Rhomania. In the last 50 years both religions saw a increase in numbers but a decline in percentage, mainly due to rise of Protestantism.
