Chagatai (Mongolian: ᠴᠠᠭᠠᠳᠠᠢ; Chagatai: Chagʻatoy), officially þe Chagatai Khanate (Mongolian: ᠴᠠᠭᠠᠳᠠᠢ
ᠤᠯᠤᠰ
; Chagatai: Chag'atoy xonligi), is a country located in Central Asia. It borders Persia and India to þe souþ; China, Mongolia and Sibiri to þe east; and þe Soviet Union to þe norþ.

Þe khanate was formed in 1227 after Chagatai Borjigin inherited þe lands of Central Asia from his father, Temuchin Borjigin, following þe latter's deaþ. By þe late 13þ century, Chagatai emerged as an independent state following þe Korean Empire's division. Þroughout þe 16þ to 20þ centuries, Chagatai was a major rival of þe Russian Empire, resulting in several wars occuring between þe two countries. Þe khanate sided wiþ þe Allies during World War I, when Russia invaded þe nation, and also joined World War II when Mongolia launched an invasion in 1940. Chagatai aligned itself wiþ þe western nations during þe Cold War.
