Chaldea is a landlocked nation in Central Mesopotamia. It is considered by much the "centre of culture on the Middle East", as historical re-building and the Modern Renaissance are stronger there than on any other place of Mesopotamia (the re-building of Babylon, including the Ishtar Gate is a great example of that). It also is on constant struggle with the nearby rump Republic of Iraq (since Baghdad is owned by them in an awkward peninsula that stretches into Chaldean territory), and Shi'ite Persia, (because of its treatment of Zoroastrians, an important minority of Chaldea, and because the Shi'ites own the area of Sumer, which Chaldea claims).
History
The Chaldean people had been a hub of civilization during ancient times. This Semitic peoples were the ones who led the Neo-Babylonian Empire through its glory and decline, until the annexation of it by Persia.
Persia held Chaldea for a long time, until the Muslim invaders passed through. Zoroastrians and Nestorians alike became "dhimmis", and slowly most of those converted to Islam.
However during a long time, Babylon continued being the centre of Mesopotamian Christianism. The Bishop encharged for all of Mesopotamia was located on its ruins. However, it is by now on a period of steep decline.
Geography
Administrative Divisions
Chaldea is divided into three administrative divisions, called provinces. They are:
- Babylonia (formerly Babil)
- Akkad (Formerly Karbala)
- Nippur (Formerly Al-Qasisyyah)
The Chaldean government also claim Baghdad and Sumer as their territory.
Sumer
Sumer is a region on southern Mesopotamia, part of Persia. The historical cities of Kish, Nippur, Ur, Uruk and Eridu are located there, and it once gave the area of Mesopotamia access to Arabia and the Persian Gulf. Chaldea claims it as an integral part of it's history and religion. However, the Shi'ites won't accept a secession of Sumer, as they are outraged by the Chaldean block of Shi'ite travelers onto Karbala, a holy city. The Chaldean government is preparing a treaty which states that Persia will secede of Sumer if free transit from Persia to Karbala is allowed. The Chaldeans are also offering 10,000,000 Chaldean Dinars (approximately 1,000,000 USD) for Sumer and Elam should the Persians ask for more.
Baghdad
Baghdad is the capital of the rump Iraqi state. Although still the capital of Iraq, it is on a "peninsula", isolated from Iraq from all sides but one. The "Baghdad Peninsula" borders the Nestorian state (Mesopotamia) north and east, and Chaldea south and south-east. The three nations claim the region. However, the Nestorians are on great instability and don't effect their claim, supporting the Chaldeans instead. The Iraqis have shown no sign of wanting to hand it over to the Chaldeans.
