Charleston, Virginia is the fifth largest city in the US state of Virginia, the largest in western Virginia (with a population of 51,000 and metro of 300,000) and the seat of Kanawha County. It is notable as the site of the 1986 bombings that killed 139 and injured hundreds when multiple truck and car bombs were detonated across the city. The fanatical anti-government militia leader Michael Raines, who was finally apprehended in the conclusion of an FBI undercover operation on June 5, 1997, has been convicted as leader of the operations that resulted in the '86 Charleston and '82 Brownburg shootings as well.
