A city-state is a state which is of very small size, being effectively confined to a city and its immediate surroundings - or, alternatively, a city which has acquired an autonomous presence in the international community.

In OTL, there are only four city-states at present: Vatican City, the home of the Pope and the center of the Roman Catholic Church; Monaco, a tiny principality on the French riviera; San Marino, a small Republic in northern Italy; and Singapore, an island city in Southeast Asia.

Mount Athos, a semi-Autonomous collection of Monasteries on a peninsula in Greece, could also be considered a city-state.
