The Colonida has a budget of just over 13 billion denarii per year. This is 13% of the Mayan Conglomerate's total military expenditure. From this fact alone it is easy to see that the navy is least important of the three services, despite being the second oldest branch, having been relagated to almost a sub branch of the Royal Airforce. Because of this the airforce are slightly snobbish towards them. However this is rare, due to the excellent anti-discrimination laws in place in the Conglomerate.

Foundation

First Stage: Lai belnalob kahlay holcan puczical...

(Those blessed first brave hearts...)

The foundation of the Colonida was a long and twisted path. The first proto-navy was constructed at the beggining of the Two Hundred Years War with the Roman Empire. However this was mightily ineffective, comprised, as it was, of a collection of large canoes (previously used for transport and colonisation) with Maya troops onboard. This proto-navy was a complete wreak, and by 1257 the Maya resorted to Fire Ships. This began the second stage of the Foundation.

Second Stage: Cah holocan lahal.

(The Valiant End.)

The idea was a simple one. Pack a ship full of gunpowder and ram it into the enemy. To sacrifice yourself was a noble aim, in fact the most noble, and since those who died in battle or were sacrificed were assured of a place in the heavens, to do both would be the greatest possible achievment. As such volunteers were drafted in and trained. This turned the tide of the

war at sea, causing the Romans great fear and anguish. The only hope of stopping one of these ships without taking damage or (more often) sinking was to hit them at a very long distance. For a time the Maya ruled the sea. But this could not go on, as the Romans were becoming more and more proficient at hitting target at large distances. Cue the True Foundation...

Mayan Naval Ideology and Tactics

The Mayans see the Navy to be the force that allows them to colonise (hence Colonida, from Latin)

The Colonida is heavily biased towards large ships, acting as a springboard for the airforce, having 80 Nuclear carriers. Springboarding the army is also a major feature (as can be seen from the 600 or so transport ships).

List of Ships

Ship notation

Mayan ships are given the notation KAS (Kuhul Ajaw Ship) followed by their name.

Notation Controversy

There were many debates as to if the K should stand for Kuhul or Kab, both titles commonly used. It was decided that as Kab ment Earth it may not be as asppropriate for a ship, though the distinction between earth as in soil and Earth as in the planet is very fine. Kuhul meanwhile evokes gods and power, the right image for going to battle or facing a raging storm.

Ship naming convention

Class names

Classes follow the Roman trend of only going to a certain number, but for the Mayans the number is 13, a lucky number. As for the class names themselves, they are almost always from Dieties and Half-Gods.
