Crimea (Autonomous Crimea, Kırım Özerk; Автономна Крим) is an Autonomous Region of Turkey .

History[]

The territory of Crimea was conquered and controlled many times throughout its history. The Cimmerians, Greeks, Scythians, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, the state of Kievan Rus', Byzantine Greeks, Kipchaks, Ottoman Turks, Golden Horde Tatars and the Mongols all controlled Crimea in its early history. Russo-Turkish War[]

In 1924, Russia and Turkey were involved in a bloody war over the Crimea. Turkey invaded while Russia was fighting Siberia. Turkey blocked off the Crimea (on October 11) from the rest of Russia with its soldiers. With the Russians unable to quickly send soldiers, Crimea surrendered after 18 days. Russia reacted and sent 50,000 soldiers on November 8. But Turkey was firmly in place and was able to inflict hevy losses on the Russians. A treaty was signed on November 20, recognizing Turkish rule over Crimea.

Turkey incorporated the Crimea in 1924, and it was made an autonomous province in 1955.
