Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba (Spanish: República de Cuba), is an island nation in the Caribbean. Throughout the Cold War, Cuba was the only Communist state in the western hemisphere, and continues to have a strong alliance with the Soviet Union. During 1994, the country was plagued by protests against Fidel Castro, forcing him to resign. After this, major political reformations began as the country re-started and re-established relations with the United States.
