In the years following the Republican Revolution, many groups spontaneously sprang up to try to fill the void left by the partial disappearance of traditional religions.
Although having varying philosophies, most of these groups, known collectively as Cults of Reason, do share some similarities:
- A Humanist philosophy.
- A stated aversion to "superstitions."
- An atheistic, agnostic or impersonal approach to deity. When one is present, he is usually referred to as "The Supreme Being", an impersonal and unknowable Demiurge.
- A recycling of Catholic and/or ancient Pagan rituals and imagery. It should be noted, however, that ritual, that are incorporated are usually done with a spirit of social binding or psychodrama, not a search for miraculous events.
