In the years following the Republican Revolution, many groups spontaneously sprang up to try to fill the void left by the partial disappearance of traditional religions.

Commonalities[]

Although having varying philosophies, most of these groups, known collectively as Cults of Reason, do share some similarities:

  • A Humanist philosophy.
  • A stated aversion to "superstitions."
  • An atheistic, agnostic or impersonal approach to deity. When one is present, he is usually referred to as "The Supreme Being", an impersonal and unknowable Demiurge.
  • A recycling of Catholic and/or ancient Pagan rituals and imagery. It should be noted, however, that ritual, that are incorporated are usually done with a spirit of social binding or psychodrama, not a search for miraculous events.
