The Republic of Cumberland, also known as simply Cumberland or alternatively as Virginia, is a country located in east-central North America. Chartered in 1607, Cumberland was one of the first English colonies in North America alongside Newfoundland and New England. Its motto, "The Old Dominion", is a reference to this status. Settlers in the region were dependent on tobacco cultivation and livestock farming, and profited off of enslaved African and Native American labor, fueling conflicts both inside and outside the colony. In addition, it faced colonial competitors to the north and limited industries because of its limited natural wealth, leaving it vulnerable to being eclipsed by its more commercially developed neighbors. To counteract this, the colony embarked on a path of rapid expansion and was forced to compete with rapidly increasing demands of the British economy, both for enslaved African labor and for raw materials. As a result, it slowly but surely developed a more stable economy with the growth of an agricultural frontier industry in its western regions. This improved the colony's agricultural quality and output. Slavery was abolished in the colony in 1863, but African-Americans were not granted full rights until 1925. Cumberland was granted its independence from Great Britain in 1935. Today, Cumberland has significant coal mining, retail, information technology, and logging industries, and is known for outdoors activities including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hunting.
