The Cygnian Imperial Army (CIA) is the largest branch of the Cygnian Imperial Armed Forces and performs land-based military operations. It is one of the six uniformed services of Cygnia and is designated as the military force of the Union in the Constitution, Article 2, Section 2, Clause 7. As the largest and senior branch of the Cygnian military, the modern Imperial Army has its roots in the Federation Army, which was formed (14 June 1783) to fight the Cygnian War of Independence (1783 – 1791) before the Empire was established. After the War of Independence, the new Imperial Congress created the Imperial Army on 3 June 1792, to replace the disbanded Federation Army. The Imperial Army considers itself descended from the Federation Army, and dates its institutional inception from the origin of that armed force in 1784.
As a uniformed military service, the Army is part of the Department for the Army, which is one of the three military departments of the Ministry of Defence. The Imperial Army is headed by a civilian senior appointed civil servant, the Secretary for the Army (SECARMY), and by a chief military officer, the Chief of the Army (CoA) who is also a member of Chiefs of Staff Committee. In the fiscal year 2017, the projected end strength for the Regular Army (CIA) was 460,000 soldiers; the Army Imperial Guard (ARIG) had 335,000 soldiers, and the Cygnian Imperial Army Reserve (CIAR) had 195,000 soldiers; the combined-component strength of the Imperial Army was 990,000 soldiers. As a branch of the armed forces, the mission of the Imperial Army is "to fight and win our Nation's wars, by providing prompt, sustained, land dominance, across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of conflict, in support of combatant commanders." The branch participates in conflicts worldwide and is the major ground-based offensive and defensive force.
