The Emirate of Cyrenaica (Arabic: إمارة برقة), colloquially known as Cyrenaica (برقة, Barqah), is a sovereign state located in North Africa. With its northern regions bound by the Mediterranean Sea, Cyrenaica shares borders with Egypt to the east, Chad to the south, and Algeria and Tripolitania to the west.
Also known as Pentapolis ("Five Cities") in antiquity, it formed part of the Roman province of Crete and Cyrenaica, later divided into Libya Pentapolis and Libya Sicca. During the Islamic period, the area came to be known as Barqa, after the city of Barca. After years of Ottoman Turkish control (1551-1912), the area became controlled as part of the Italian Empire after the Italo-Turkish War. A weakening of colonial control after World War I led to a brief but notable time of independence (1919-1935), before Fascist Italy re-invaded Cyrenaica.
