Czechoslovak Television (Czech: Československá televize; Slovak: Československá televízia; abbreviation: ČST) is a public television broadcaster in Czechoslovakia, broadcasting eight channels. It was founded on 1 May 1953. Headquartered in Prague, the organization is a non-profit organization, funded mainly through government payments and television license fees (70%) and making the remaining income from advertising and sponsorship. The ČST is the dominant player in the Czechoslovak broadcast media.
The federative nature of Czechoslovakia and the fact that the country has both Czech and Slovak as official languages, the ČST is divided into two regional corporations:
- Czech Federative Republic: Česká televize (ČT)
- Slovak Federative Republic: Slovenská televízia (STV)
These two corporations maintain ČST as a joint central production and broadcasting association.
