History[]
1919 Dalmatian War of Independence[]
Main article: Dalmatian Independence War
In 1919, the popularity of the idea of an independent Dalmatian state was rising. The Dalmatian people spoke Dalman, a different language from their overlords of Hungary. This unrest would culminate in civil war when a militia of Dalmatian war veterans known as the Free Dalmatian Army declared a war of independence against Hungary, beginning attacks and occupations of government buildings. The conflict would last for a couple of years, and exhaust the forces of the Hungarians. Finally, in 1921, Hungary, after their defeat in the Third Great War, would recognize the Kingdom of Dalmatia as an independent state.
