  • In the years leading up to the death of Eli Whitney, cotton farming was becoming more and more unprofitable.
  • Due to the labor-intensive nature of agriculture (cotton in particular), the cost of keeping slaves began to overtake the profits being made by growing cotton and other crops.
  • The use of slavery as a labor force was on the decline, therefore abolitionist movements in slave states encounter little opposition from slave owners when lobbying for the abolition of slavery.
  • With the near halt of raw materials exported from the New World, the textile industries in Great Britain and France suffer greatly, all but halting the blooming industrial revolutions in the countries.
  • Responding to this economic downturn, France and Great Britain invested reinvigorated efforts into developing their territories in East Asia and the northern portions of the New World.
