The Democratic Party of Indochina (DPI), is a centre-right political party of Indochina. It is the largest opposition party in the Federal Assembly, which has been dominated by the Worker's Party of Indochina (WPI) since 1955.
The DPI was originally founded on 30 July 1944 to unite petite bourgeoisie and intelligentsia in support of the Viet Minh (later became the WPI) and in effect its satellite party. It was a member of the Indochinese Fatherland Front, a WPI-led coalition, until 1991, when it broke away from the WPI and became the opposition party.
Although founded as a party of social democracy, the DPI has gradually become more conservative; upon its secession from the WPI-led coalition, the DPI has solifidied its position as the leader of the conservative movement in Indochina. Its allies include the Conservative Party (far-right) and Freedom Party (libertarian). Together, they formed the Conservative Bloc in the Federal Assembly, which managed to form two federal cabinets (out of 16) since 1955.
