The Democratic Party of Japan (民主党 Minshutō) is a Centre-left political party in Japan founded in 1953 by the merger of several opposition parties. It is one of the most consistently successful political parties in the world. As of October 22, 2017, it holds 131 seats in the House of Councillors and 297 seats in the House of Representatives.
