Alternative History

The Democratic Party of the United States, commonly known as the Democratic Party, is one of two major political parties in the United States. Founded on Feb 8th, 1828 by Andrew Jackson supporters, from the Civil War to now it has struggled to gain dominance.

Democratic areas tend to be in the South, although pockets of areas outside that are Democratic. While the party's main platform is liberal and center left, most voters are right wing conservatives from the South. The last time the Democratic Party ever held a majority of voter registration was before the Civil War. In addition to the large southern conservative and mainstream liberal wings, moderate and progressive wings of the party exist, although there is a rarest socialist wing, which, like the New Right, failed to gain power and has only 1 member in Congress, but at its height it had 13 congresspeople.

FDR, Henry Wallace and JFK were all liberals, George Wallace and Roy Barnes were conservatives, and Carter and Clinton were moderates.

Voting Blocs[]

Southern Conservatives[]

The Southern Conservatives, or Conservative Democrats, make up a majorty of the Democratic voter base and federal politicians. In many Southern states, the dominance is more Democratic than the nation on average. In fact, dominance in the state of South Carolina is near total by large margins, and several other states have large margins but aren't totalled by Democrats.

Southern Conservatives tend to be extermely socially conservative and moderately fiscaly conservative. Their opposition towards spending projects makes them an attack point for Republicans, calling them a "fiscal drain". Southern Conservatives also tend to attack Conservative Republicans, calling them CINO (Conservative In Name Only) similar to the OTL RINO term.

While initially a majority in Congress, they soon fell to the Rockefeller Republicans in 1970, during the Republican Revolution.

However, several Southern Unionist areas have never voted on the Democratic Party since several elections.

Mainstream Liberals[]

The "establishment" of the party, Mainstream Liberals are liberal Democrats who are both socially and fiscally liberal. While they dominate the party platform and it's poilicies, they don't have the edge that the Southern Conservatives have.

Found in the Northeast and Midwest, as the stereotype implies (just like Southern Conservatives being from the South), these Democrats rarely break from the party platform.
