The 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries were a series of primaries and caucuses for presidential candidates in the Democratic Party. Florida Governor Marco Rubio managed to secure the nomination.

While there were six total candidates, only three managed to win any contests. Polling initially showed Vice President Kay Hutchinson of Texas to be the frontrunner, however after she ruled out a presidential run, the field was left wide open to numerous contenders. Arkansas Governor Hillary Clinton was the first to declare her candidacy, followed by Senator Mike Pence of Indiana the next day. By July, Governor Marco Rubio, former Governor Chad Connelly of South Carolina, Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, were in the Democratic race.

Rubio, Toomey, and Landrieu attracted the moderate to liberal wing of the party, while Clinton, Pence, and Connelly attracted the conservative wing of the party.
