The Kingdom of Denmark, occasionally referred to as Denmark-Norway, is a European nation situated in southern Scandinavia and on the Baltic and North Seas. The country is a constitutional monarchy, with its current head of state the Queen Margrethe II, and has a representative Parliament. It is the oldest successive country in Europe, dating back to the 1100's, and is the wealthiest country in Europe based on standard of living and a GDP to population ratio. As of 2010, Denmark has a population of about 14 million. Its capital and largest city is Copenhagen, and the country has numerous other large cities, including Christiania, Trondheim, Lybaek, Kiel and Aarhus. The country also includes numerous islands in the Baltic and North Atlantic, although it was forced to cede the Faeroes to Ireland after a war in the 1910s.
Denmark has, throughout its history, been a staunch ally of the French Empire and is a key member of the European Community, and was previously a major contributor to the Council of Industrial Countries and the Versailles Pact.
